Maryland firm acquires local urgent care center operator

February 5, 2015–ExpressCare Urgent Care Centers of Maryland has acquired CareSTAT Urgent Care Centers, which operates four centers in the region.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.  CareSTAT Urgent Care Centers, founded in late 2011 by Cheltenham native Dr. Jonathan Gusdorff and his wife, Jaime, operates urgent care centers in Abington, Folsom, Havertown and Springield.  ExpressCare, owned by Dr. Maurice Reid, operates 14 urgent care centers in Maryland and two centers in Delaware  The deal shows the Philadelphia region continues to be an attractive — and competitive — market for operators of urgent-care centers. Operators of such facilities, which serve as an alternative to crowded hospital emergency rooms for people with injuries and illnesses that are not life threatening, include physicians, health systems and entrepreneurs.  Gusdorff said his decision to sell CareSTAT was based on personal reasons.  “Jaime and I loved this business but it was taking its toll on us,” he said. “If we were to continue, we would have had to take on partners, obtain venture capital or merge with a larger center because of the changing healthcare environment and competitive landscape. We were approached by a private party and considered another option. Jaime, who really was the backbone of HR and financial operations, and I discussed the possibility of 100 percent buyout, weighed the pros and cons and decided that the timing was right to sell outright.  “Dr. Reid has built an amazing company over the past 10 years. Our vision for what CareSTAT would have looked like in a few years has a strong resemblance to what ExpressCare looks like today. They are a great company and also physician owned,” he said, “which was very important to us.”
